The US flags on the main landmarks in Washington, DC, such as the Pentagon and the US Capitol, were seen lowered on Friday. US President Donald Trump ordered all flags on government buildings and national monuments to fly at half-mast over Memorial Day weekend in honour of the nearly 100,000 victims dying with coronavirus-related complications. The move reportedly came after Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to the president requesting the flags to be lowered. Trump also requested the re-opening of places of worship for the holiday weekend, deeming the institutions «essential» and declaring he would «override» governors who might refuse to do so.
