US President Donald Trump announced several new measures the government will be enacting to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, including a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures until the end of April, and the invocation of the Defense Production Act to fulfill a shortage of medical equipment and supplies while speaking to the press in Washington DC on Wednesday. Vice President Mike Pence also shared the decision come to earlier in the day out of discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to close the border with Canada, which would only apply to «non-essential travel» and not to goods or essential travel. When asked by a reporter why he insisted on referring to the illness as «The Chinese Virus,» the president answered, «It's not racist at all, no. Not at all. It comes from China. That's why. It comes from China. I want to be accurate. As you know, China tried to say at one point — maybe they stopped now — that it was caused by American soldiers. That can't happen. That's not going to happen. Not as long as I'm president. It comes from China.» The president shared progress on the state of a potential vaccine for the virus, which he claimed had reached human trials in record time by «many many months.» The emergency measures, partly enabled by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), come amid a flurry of new cases and lockdowns on the part of local municipalities, leaving many Americans out of work. The US is poised to reach nearly 8,000 cases with a total of 120 fatalities resulting from the illness.
