Hundreds of protesters occupied the space directly outside City Hall Plaza in New York City on Tuesday following the decision by Mayor Bill de Blasio's to cut $1 billion (€890 million) in funding to the police. Protesters have been sleeping in tents in the park and have already set up an organised system with shared food and sanitation, similar to scenes in Seattle's autonomous zone. Footage filmed at the camp highlights peaceful protesters as well as some anger shown towards the media presence and cameras at the scene. On Monday, Mayor de Blasio announced that the city would cut the police budget by the aforementioned $1 billion by canceling the upcoming hiring of over 1,000 new police officers and moving those funds to the Department of Education. «They're saying they are going to cut $1 billion dollars from the NYPD's budget, right? It's not what they're doing, it's not what they're doing. What they're doing is reallocating the funds from the NYPD to the Department of Education so that there can be cops in schools. Is that what we want? Is that what we asked for?,» exclaimed Black Lives Matter organiser Patricia O'Neille to a cheering crowd. The sentiment among the protesters was one of disapproval towards the proposal, with banners reading «Defund, disarm, abolish,» as well as «$1 Billion is not enough. Defund the police. Shut it down» on display.
