George Floyd's family's attorney Ben Crump said that racism and the use of excessive force by Minneapolis police officers is what killed George Floyd, in response to claims that Floyd overdosed on Fentanyl. Crump made the comments outside Hennepin county family justice centre in Minneapolis on Friday. «They [the defence] are trying to claim some asinine theory about an overdose. I want to be clear about this. The only overdose that killed George Floyd, was an overdose of excessive force and racism from the Minnesota, Minneapolis police department,» said Crump, while speaking to dozens of protesters and members of the media who had gathered outside the court for the hearing, where the four officers involved in Floyd's killing presented arguments for their defence for several hours. The protesters were seen waving Black Lives Matter signs and chanting anti-police slogans as prosecuting attorneys made statements after the hearings. The protesters were also seen scolding Thomas Lane attorney Earl Gray, who recently claimed Floyd had died of a Fentanyl overdose, as he left the building. Demonstrations against police brutality and racism have been taking place in Portland and across the US since late May, following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of a police officer.
