USA: DREAMers and DACA advisors react to passing of renewal deadline

Visitors and employees at La Raza Community Resource Centre, San Francisco, shared their opinions following the October 5 deadline for renewing DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) status, Friday. An adviser to so-called 'DREAMers' — people covered by the DACA programme — Sandra Becerra said people need to «demand that we'll have a clean DREAM Act that doesn't further criminalise undocumented immigrants and we call out congressmen and our supervisors to make sure they are also being vocal about supporting people.» In September, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions officially announced Trump's decision to rescind the DACA programme, leaving Congress to come up with an alternative legislation to regulate the people under DACA's protection within the next six months. The administration of former US President Barack Obama established the DACA programme in 2012 to enable migrants, who were brought illegally to the country as children, to apply for a temporary right to study or work in the USA. A successful application would mean that they are able to defer the threat of possible deportation for another two years.
