Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden slammed President Trump's response to the coronavirus outbreak in the US and proposed a plan of his own, during a campaign event in Wilmington on Thursday. «Our government's ability to respond effectively undermined by hollowing our agencies and discouragement of science. And our ability to drive a global response is dramatically undercut by the damage Trump has done to our credibility and our relationships around the world,» said Biden. «The administration's failure on testing is colossal. It's a failure of planning, leadership and execution.» The presidential hopeful proposed guidelines on how to respond to the crisis, saying «The core principle is simple, public health professionals must be the ones making our public health decisions and communicating with the American people.» «Anyone that needs to be tested based on medical guidance, should be tested at no charge,» he added. The event, held at the Hotel DuPont in downtown Wilmington, was for the media only and was called at the last minute to replace a previously scheduled rally in Tampa, Florida that was postponed due to concerns regarding large gatherings. Biden made his remarks about the latest developments of the COVID-19 without taking questions from the reporters in attendance. Nearly 130,000 people are confirmed to have been infected by the coronavirus worldwide and over 4700 deaths as of Thursday, according to John Hopkins University, compiling data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) among others. There are over 1,600 confirmed cases in the US, where the disease killed 38 people.
