Around 300 demonstrators gathered in support of the second amendment, their right to bear arms, outside the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing on Thursday. Protesters wearing military uniforms and carrying an array of weapons and Trump flags could be seen. The rally fell on Constitution Day and most of the attendees were not wearing masks or practising social distancing. One protester, Jerry Wayne, said he believed the second amendment to be important «because it truly gives the American people, or any civilians of that matter, the control over their government.» He said that without weapons, the people are «unable to overthrow that government,» as they don't have control over the government. «I do think all citizens should be armed if they want to, because that way, the government is now going to be representing the 'populous.' And if they cannot represent the 'populous,' then they are not representing the 'populous,'» he continued. The debate over gun control has been a long dispute in the US. Part of the population is advocating for strict gun regulations to prevent mass shootings while a section of the population is defending its right to carry a firearm as stipulated in the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution. The 2nd Amendment has been in effect since December 15, 1791 and states, «A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.»
