UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new three-tier alert system to tackle the rising numbers of COVID-19 infections in England, speaking at the British parliament in London on Monday. «We will now simplify and standardise our local rules by introducing a three tiered system of local coded alert levels in England at medium, high and very high,» said Johnson. Most of the country will be placed under 'medium alert' meaning the areas will follow the rule of six while restaurants and bars will close at 10pm. Putting areas on 'high alert' would aim to stop «household- to-household transmission by preventing all mixing between different households or support bubbles indoors.» Finally, according to Johnson, the 'very high alert' tier «will apply where transmission rates are rising most rapidly and where the NHS could soon be under unbearable pressure without further restrictions.» «In these areas, the government will set a baseline of prohibiting social mixing indoors and in private gardens, and I am sorry to say, closing pubs and bars,» he added. However, the prime minister said that «retail, schools and universities will remain open.»
