UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a press conference from 10 Downing Street on Wednesday in which he confirmed the details of the new 'Rule of six' coronavirus measure. «It's clear from that very powerful graphic, that powerful slide, that we must act,» stated Johnson immediately after an update on the current rise in numbers from Head of the National Institute for Health Research Chris Whitty. «So, in England, from Monday, we're introducing the rule of six. You must not meet socially in groups of more than six. And, if you do, you will be breaking the law. This will apply in any setting, indoors or outdoors, at home or in the pub. The ban will be set out in law and will be enforced by the police. And, anyone breaking the rules risks being dispersed, fined and possibly arrested,» explained Johnson. Johnson went on to explain that there would be some exemptions. «If a single household or support bubble is larger than six,» Johnson said. «COVID-secure venues like places of worship, gyms, restaurants, hospitality venues, can still hold more than six in total. Within those venues, however, there must not be individual groups larger than six,» Johnson went on to explain. «I want to be absolutely clear, these measures are not another national lockdown. The whole point of them is to avoid a second national lockdown,» confirmed the Prime Minister. The UK was one of the worst-hit nations by the coronavirus outbreak. Thus far 41,594 have suffered COVID-related deaths. The number of confirmed cases has been rising recently. The latest figures show that there had been a further 2,659 confirmed cases over the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 355,219. Mandatory credit: ITN.
