Police deployed tear gas, mounted units, and armoured vehicles in Belgrade late on Tuesday to counter protests against a renewed coronavirus lockdown that continued into the early hours of Wednesday morning. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced a new weekend long lockdown on Tuesday amid a sharp rise in the number of coronavirus infections in the Serbian capital. Clean-up operations could also be seen underway as fire personnel extinguished fires set during the protests, while street cleaners hosed the streets. According to reports, 43 police officers, as well as 17 protesters, were injured during the clashes. Some protesters tried to storm the National Assembly building with police responding with tear gas. Critics of the new lockdown have alleged that the government, which lifted almost all restrictions just two weeks ago, prior to the parliamentary elections on June 21, has mislead the public about the scale of the outbreak.
