A caravan of Peruvian migrants were seen stranded on the Ramiro Pirale highway near Lima on Monday. Nearly 300 migrants from the San Martin region have spent four days on the road waiting for help from the government to return them to their place of origin.
After a month of national restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, without income and public aid, their stay in the capital became unsustainable so they decided to make the journey back home. Footage shows police cordoning off the caravan of migrants as they receive food and water and advance along the road. According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, Peru has recorded 16,325 cases of coronavirus and 445 deaths so far.
