A memorial service took place in Vijfhuizen near Schiphol Airport on Friday, on the sixth anniversary of the MH17 plane crash which took almost 300 lives. The service, which was held near the monument dedicated to the victims, was streamed live with far fewer people present at the ceremony in person, due to the coronavirus pandemic. «Because of the coronavirus, our commemoration is rather different this year. In this live stream format, you can't embrace or even really see one another. There was no other option,» said Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte in a video message prior to the memorial service. Flight MH17 departed Schiphol Airport and was set for Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, before being shot down while flying over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.
