Libya: Benghazi residents uncertain Berlin Libya conference will succeed

Residents of Benghazi, a stronghold of General Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA), voiced their scepticism about the likelihood of the upcoming Libya peace conference in Berlin coming to a successful conclusion, on Saturday. «I don't think that this conference will be successful in finding a comprehensive approach to peace in Libya. I think that sooner or later after the Berlin conference we will see fighting again in Libya, because the background for dialogue between both parties is fragile, there is very little that's agreed upon while there are so many disputed-upon [matters]» said one of the residents. Another local stated that for him the Berlin conference would be a failure if it didn't address the «chaos in Tripoli and some other Libyan cities,» and if it did not result in the dismissal of militia forces. The forces of the UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) are opposed by Haftar's LNA, with the country currently being torn between the two. Haftar is expected to arrive in the German capital on Sunday in order to attend the peace conference, with the head of the GNA, Fayez al-Sarraj, also set to participate. The event will be hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and attended by the presidents of Russia, Turkey, France, and the Republic of the Congo as well as the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.
