Destroyed shops and vehicles were seen in central Beirut on Sunday in the aftermath of a night of clashes between the police and protesters. Ammunition casing from what appears to have been tear gas used against protesters during clashes with police, and the remnants of the gallows used to stage the anti-government demonstration could also be seen on the floor. Thousands of demonstrators gathered in and around Martyrs' Square on Saturday, voicing their anger over the current government who they blame for Tuesday's port explosions. Several dozen protesters have been injured as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Beirut to demand the resignation of the country's government. According to local reports, at least one police officer died in the clashes. Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has called for an early election as Information Minister Manal Abdel Samad became the first government official to resign on Sunday.
