Italy: Clashes erupt at anti-Erdogan protest near Vatican

5 февраля 2018 г. 18:57

Clashes erupted between protesters and police officers in front of the Vatican, as demonstrators staged a rally against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's official visit to Rome on Monday. Despite a 24-hour demonstration-ban, around 200 Kurdish supporters came to protest outside the Vatican. Rome authorities dispatched roughly 3,500 police officers. Erdogan has met with Pope Francis, and is expected to meet President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni during a two-day visit. Rome is on high alert and a «green zone» has been created in which protests will be prohibited, according to a security plan.
