Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday called Israel a «cancerous tumour» and hailed Tehran's support to Palestinians in their «holy struggle.» The comments were made in an online speech on Quds Day. «The Zionist regime [Israel] is a deadly and cancerous tumour and a detriment to this region. It will undoubtedly be uprooted and destroyed,» said Khamenei, who also compared Israel to a «long-lasting virus.» «Everyone must assist the Palestinian nation in this holy struggle. Everyone must join to the Palestinian fighters and stand behind them. We will proudly do everything in our power on this path,» he added. Iran’s supreme leader also accused «arrogant powers and Zionism» of attempting to «push aside the issue of Palestine off the minds of Muslim communities.» Khamenei extended his criticism to the United Nations for «not fulfilling its function» and to the human rights organisations for not defending the rights of women and children in Yemen and Palestine. The Quds [Jerusalem] Day is an annual event held on the last Friday of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan and has drawn participation from around the world since it was introduced in 1979 by the late Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khomeini. **RESTRICTIONS: NO Access Israel Media/Persian Language TV Stations Outside Iran/Strictly No Access BBC Persian/VOA Persian/Manoto-1 TV/Iran International**
