Thousands of Muslim protesters rallied against French President Emmanuel Macron outside the French embassy in Jakarta on Monday, as the backlash against the president's recent comments on Islam continued. Demonstrators stood on a picture of Macron, while another protester could be seen pretending to hang another man who was wearing a mask of the French president and holding a French flag. A member of the Islamic Defenders Front, an Islamist political and vigilante group that was one of the protest's organisers, called for Macron to be beheaded for his comments. France has witnessed a number of attacks after French teacher Samuel Paty was killed on October 16, after showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to his students during a discussion on freedom of speech. Macron has defended the pictures as an expression of freedom of speech and called Islam a religion 'in crisis.' His comments triggered protests in predominantly-Muslim countries around the world as well as criticism from Muslim political leaders.
