At least 17 people, many still in their sleep, were killed when a fire swept through a hotel in Delhi during the early hours of Tuesday. Some of the victims were burnt to death while others were suffocated by the toxic fumes after the fire started at around 4:30am local time (11:30pm GMT.) Other guests were unable to use corridors to escape because of wooden panelling covering the exits. A woman and a child were among the victims after they jumped from the building to escape the blaze. According to early reports, the fire could have started because of a short circuit. The Artpit Palace hotel, located in the Karol Bagh area, was hosting around 150 guests, including a group of tourists from Myanmar. Authorities are trying to determine the names and nationalities of the victims. At least 35 people were rescued and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
