India: Chandigarh students return to school under tight anti-coronavirus measures

Students in Chandigarh finally returned to school on Monday following a six months pause, as some educational facilities finally reopened partially with strict anti-coronavirus measures. Wearing face masks, some of the pupils at Government Model High School, were seen arriving at the school facilities as they disinfected their hands and had their temperatures checked. Once inside the classroom, the students were spotted maintaining safe social distancing as the teacher gave her class. «Today the schools have opened after six months. 50 percent of the teachers and staff members are here today,» said Government Model High School head teacher Ranjana Srivatsav. «Everyone entering the school is using sanitiser, we have an oximeter and we are checking temperatures for everyone,» added Srivatsav. According to reports, students in secondary education can voluntarily return to school, provided a safety distance is kept, temperature checks are conducted upon arrival and classes are held outside whenever possible. India has the second-highest number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus after the United States. The country has reported 5,487,580 cases and 87,882 related deaths, according to data complied by Johns Hopkins University.
