German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke on the gradual lifting of the lockdown put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 at the Bundestag in Berlin on Wednesday. The chancellor acknowledged the efforts made in the last weeks during the country's semi-confinement period, but emphasised the «obligation not to jeopardise» what's been achieved until now. «It would be depressing if, because we want too much too fast, we had to go back to restrictions that we all want to leave behind. So let us be brave and vigilant. Let's gradually reopen public and economic life, always keeping the pandemic in sight,» she said. Merkel further said that «the protection of people's health and an approach that allows our economy to catch up as quickly as possible» are «both possible in the next phase of the pandemic.» As of Wednesday, Germany has reported 173,647 coronavirus cases and 7,788 fatalities, as Johns Hopkins University compiled data shows, dropping to the 8th position in the list of the highest infected countries by coronavirus.
