Police force and sanitation workers were out on the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday for a cleaning operation as part of efforts to halt the spread of COVID-19. 'Blitz da Vida' or 'Blitz for life,' saw the police target illegal street vendors while waste and garbage were removed from the area. Officers were also giving away masks to the public. «Today, Rio de Janeiro city hall and the state government is realising this big operation named Blitz da vida. In this region we are disinfecting and cleaning up due to the large amount of people in the city centre. We also give away masks and organise traffic, for safety and to fight coronavirus,» said Blitz da vida executive secretary Alexandro Carracena. Brazil had a relatively late start during the COVID-19 pandemic, but then became the second-hardest hit country in the world.
