Sao Paulo residents reacted on Wednesday to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's announcement that he had tested positive for coronavirus. «He was saying the virus was a joke, it was something mild, that he would not get it since he had a record of being an athlete, so I think it's really fair that he got it because many people got the disease and died and he didn't do anything,» said Leonardo. Jessica, a local resident, pointed out that Bolsonaro «was going to packed places without wearing a mask, encouraging Brazilians to do the same,» adding that «he unnecessarily exposed himself» and that «he simply sets an example that's the complete opposite of what's recommended.» The 65-year-old president, who has in several occasions played down the coronavirus, told the press that he was already feeling better and later on Tuesday posted a video of himself on social media taking hydroxychloroquine, a drug of which he is a staunch defender, although its effectiveness in fighting coronavirus has not been proven. A local newspaper headline on Wednesday could be seen on a newstand reading «Positive test, negative example». «I believe he did not respect quarantine, like many Brazilians, and he is reaping what he sowed because it's not a little flu like he said, it's something very serious and COVID-19 is killing lots of people, not only in Brazil but around the world. So in my opinion he got what he deserved, right?» said Rebeca. Brazil has more than 1.6 million coronavirus cases and 66,887 deaths with the virus as of Wednesday, according to the country's states health secretaries.
