Residents from the New South Wales village of Cobargo shared their stories of being evacuated as the historic village was devastated by a firestorm on New Year's Eve, as seen in footage shot on Friday. «It's a catastrophe, environmentally, I haven't allowed myself to nearly embrace the emotional gravity yet, because we still have to stay strong.» Jackie Jones a local resident of Cobargo said. She added, «We felt the army could have come sooner, now that they are here, you know the choppers were in the sky today looking for spot fires in the forest, you know there is a much nicer feeling about feeling safer.» Two residents of Cobargo, a father and son, have reportedly lost their lives after being hit by a fireball. Footage shows destroyed buildings houses and burnt trees as well as the Australian flag flying at half-mast for residents who died. At least 25 people and around half a billion animals have reportedly died since the fires began as a result of a record-breaking heatwave in September, with around 5,000,000 hectares (12,355,269 acres) affected.
