Protesters rallied in Algiers on Monday to show their support for the upcoming presidential election that will take place on Thursday, December 12. One of the protesters said that the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) is behind the rally and denounced «the interference of foreign countries in Algerian politics.» «We also support the elections in order to get out of the crisis,» said another demonstrator. Algerians are set to head to polling stations on Thursday, following a wave of protests and political turmoil in the country which lasted several months. The protests began in February after 82-year-old then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced he would be running for a fifth term in office. While he dropped his bid and ultimately resigned in April, the protests continued, demanding a complete political overhaul. On Friday, thousands of demonstrators marched on the streets of Algiers to oppose the election, calling for a boycott and a general strike.
